Lovers easily can lose their hearts in San Francisco. The trolley’s clang-clang-clang is music to their ears, as they hold hands in a cable car crawling sanfran_grapesup, down and over the hills of San Francisco. A walk or drive down Lombard Street, “The World’s Crookedest Street,” is an experience to remember. Shops in busy Chinatown lure passersby with fresh fish, produce and imported specialties. An ice cream at Ghirardelli’s is a must, as is a walk through touristy Fisherman’s Wharf. With more than 1000 acres of rose gardens, parkland and lakes, plus more than 1 million trees, Golden Gate Park is the perfect place to enjoy a multitude of activities including picnicking, music, golf, museums, music, and flower gardens while walking hand in hand.

It’s the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset, however, that takes the breath away and inspires some serious kissing.  Only about an hour north of San Francisco is Napa Valley, with its many wineries and tours to tease the palate. Special menus are frequently prepared by celebrity chefs and include, of course, wine. Napa can be toured by limo, bus, carriage, train or hot air balloon.

Gondolas of snuggled lovers quietly slip through inky black canals at sunset. City lights dance on the water and set romance aglow as the evening darkness draws in. In Venice, all is quieter in the evening, when the day tourists are gone and lovers are left behind to stroll through narrow city streets and across small bridges. Dinners along the Grand Canal are splendid, especially at the Naranzaria in the heart of the Rialto, where the specialty of the house is raw food. If money is no object, lovers can sleep like royalty in the Gritti Palace, an actual doge’s palace built in 1525. By day, the Bridge of Sighs whispers secrets of the past, St. Mark’s Basilica amazing artwork beckons, and violinists at Piazza San Marco cafes make it easy to sit down for an afternoon espresso.

Two major Himalayan ranges, the Great Himalayan Range and the Pir Panjal, surround the landscape from the north and south respectively. They are the source of great rivers, which flow down into the valleys, forested with orchards and decorated by lily-laden lakes.

The Mughals aptly called Kashmir ‘Paradise on Earth’ where they journeyed across the hot plains of India, to the valley’s cool environs in summer. Here they laid, with great love and care, Srinagar’s many formal, waterfront gardens, now collectively known as the Mughal Gardens. They also patronized the development of art & craft among the people of Kashmir, leaving behind a heritage of exquisite artisanship among these people and making the handicrafts of the land prized gifts all over the world.Kashmir is a land where myriad holiday ideas are realised. In winter, when snow carpets the mountains, there is skiing, tobogganing, sledge-riding, etc. along the gentle slopes. In spring and summer, the honey-dewed orchards, rippling lakes and blue skies beckon every soul to sample the many delights the mountains and valleys have to offer. Golfing at 2,700 m above the sea, water-skiing in the lakes and angling for prized rainbow trout, or simply drifting down the willow fringed alleys of lakes in shikaras and living in gorgeous houseboats are some of the most favoured ones.

greece“Kali mera” is how one greets the day in Santorini, where blue and white is the color scheme. Blue skies overhead and blue water below are the backdrop to charming whitewashed houses clinging to the hillside. The Caldera of Santorini, formed more than 3,500 years ago by a huge volcanic eruption, is now the harbor and seascape for Santorini.

Arriving at the main port, visitors walk or take a donkey ride along the mile-long path up to Fira, or hop a cable car to the top. For the best view at sunset, lovers travel to the quaint village of Oia on the north side of the island. Sunset is even more enchanting from the top of Oia’s 16-century castle ruins. A boat tour to the Santorini volcano and nearby hot springs may be on the agenda, and those more energetic may even include a climb to the top of the volcano. As in Pompeii, ruins of a city devastated by a catastrophic volcanic eruption mesmerize visitors to Akrotiri. Santorini will capture lovers’ hearts with its vistas, beaches, wineries and amazing cuisine.

quebec city canadaIs Quebec City the most romantic destination in North America? Many would argue that it is. More affordable than flying to France, a trip to Quebec City offers the perfect mix of old and new, all spoken in the language of love (French, of course).  The city’s architecture is reminiscent of old Europe, and theatre, arts and festivals abound. And, of course, the dining is divine. Tres romantique!

After passing through one of four stone gates, lovers can explore the 400-year-old walled city’s history down narrow, cobblestone streets by horse and buggy or on foot.  Drive or cycle to surrounding areas for views of beautiful old villas and historic 19th-century estates.

In only a little over three miles and 15 minutes downstream of Quebec City, lovers can spend the day on the Ile d’Orleans, with its mixture of French, English and American cultural history. A self-guided tour explains farms, churches and old cemeteries.
